Ms. Perla’s View on Music in Early Childhood Development

Perla Vazquez Casas, TeacherTeachers

Music at an early age doesn’t only help to calm your baby when crying, but also has a great impact on his/her learning skills and development. Music helps them to learn about the culture in your home and even introduces them to cultures from around the world. Music also plays a very important role in support interaction and communication with your children. Children learn to read facial expressions and adults tend to be very expressive when listening to music with their children.

Most parents introduce music into their children’s’ lives as a way of comfort when they’re anxious or crying Parents play music or sing songs to them to help calm them or create a tranquil or reassuring environment or to stimulate other senses for example happiness or enjoyment. What you might not realize is that your child is also experiencing and learning from these senses while also learning things like words and distinguishing the differences between mommy and daddy’s voices.

I love to play music in the classroom not only to have smoother days at work, but to keep the children happier. I love to see how they react to songs. We play all kinds of different music genres from salsa, cumbia, regional Mexicano, children’s music, and classical music. It is truly rewarding and brings smiles to our faces to see how each of the children have their own unique dancing moves  - “DO THE JUNIOR”!!! 😂😍. We give names to those dancing moves and, believe it or not, the kids definitely have their own favorite songs!

Every time we play their songs they squeal with joy and recognition to hear their special songs. It is beautiful to see the kids’ reactions and it reminds me how important music is. I also like to play nap and relaxing music so our children can sleep longer and accumulate more energy. More naps ….. More Dancing!!!
